Mother's Day Menu

One of the worst symptoms of this pregnancy is the food aversions. Normally, there aren't many things that I will not eat, or at least try. During my first few months, I was not interested in eating much at all. Not eating obviously equalled not cooking.

It has only been since late April that I have jumped back on the cooking train. For Mother's Day, and my mom's birthday, we celebrated by preparing a lovely meal. I have never used so much buttermilk in one menu!

Serendipitous Strawberries

Cooking relaxes and makes me happy. I love being able to create something that I know will please others. When I am able to serendipitously able to come up with a recipe that is a winner - well, I am usually eager to share it with others.

On Saturday morning I realised we were out of syrup. We did have the fake stuff, but only dear husband will consume that junk. I searched for ingredients to create a sweet topping for my crispy french toast and here is what I came up with. Ridiculously simple, but wonderfully tasty.

Vanilla Strawberry Topping
1.5 c of frozen strawberries
1/4 c of water
1/2 t of grated lemon rind
pinch of salt
1/3 c granulated sugar
1/5 of a piece of vanilla bean
Mix together all of the ingredients in a medium pot and place over medium-low heat. Allow to simmer for 10 min. Mush the strawberries with a fork and cook for 5 min. more. Cool for a short time before serving.

Noteworthy Blog

A friend has begun blogging her food experiences. And in my opinion it is a very accessible and inspiring site. If you are looking for ideas for a dinner party or quick meal - the Menu Maniac is the place to go. Jordana is a former cooking club member (until she left us for higher education). We miss her but are more than happy to read about her endeavours on her new blog.

That was waaaay too long!

Well, I'm back and bearing great news. After an exhausting first trimester I am very excited to announce that BABY POUTINE is on his way! I am due in early September and dear husband and I couldn't be more thrilled.

In my extended absence, things have been piling up: recipes, cooking club meetings, dinner parties...

I will attempt to update you in the next few posts.
